Michael goes vinyl!

5/31/2018

Picture
Michael (aka Miki) Greenberg and daughter Giselle will officially release their new record SOMEONE OLD, SOMEONE NEW at an Old Town School concert June 9th at 8 PM.   In keeping with an exclusively vinyl LP release, the photo captures the two artists on their way to the post office with a wagon full of records going out to kickstarter investors and friends.   (Sister Indigo is riding shotgun.)

It's a great record with songs written severally by Miki and Giselle and backed up by accomplished Old Town musicians who have worked with Miki in the past.  It is expected that digital copies of the songs will be available soon, but the cover of the LP is stunning and well worth having.

An interview with the father/daughter team was aired on the morning of May 31st on WBEZ and may still be available from the station.   Congratulations to both!   Miki is, of course, the Wishbone FOH Manager and impresario for our evening concert series (see the EVENTS page)

St. Patrick's Day Concert

3/6/2017

DISCOVER THE CHARM OF THE EMERALD ISLE

Picture
On Friday, March 17th at 7 PM a special celebration of St. Patrick's will take place at Wishbone--far from the braying crowd--in the form of a concert by Jamie O'Reilly and other splendid singers and musicians.  This marks the second year that Wishbone has tipped its hat to the rich musical and lyric traditions of Ireland in addition to menu offerings and drinks that depart from our usual fare.

Ms. O'Reilly comes from a storied performing family here in Chicago and THAT tradition is carried forward in the harmonies of her daughters, Meg and Nia.  Peter Swenson's guitar and John Floeter's bass are equally well known in venues throughout Chicago.

Discounted tickets FOR THE CONCERT ONLY may be purchased in advance through www.jamieoreilly.com (CLICK ON PHOTO)  and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Woman's Health Clinic.  Reservations for the concert room will be coordinated by the O'Reilly ticket sales or by calling 773.203.7661 for more information.

Food and drink specials (and regular menu items) are purchased separately from Wishbone--either before or during the concert.

Join us for a heart-warming evening of ballads and shanties--not to mention our own house prepared corned beef, cabbage and other treats and cocktails.    Cheers to all.

Escargot at Wishbone?  Works by Iwona Biedermann

2/14/2015

Picture
February and March in the Couloir Bleu Gallery feature the photographs of Iwona Biedermann in an extraordinary collection of images from the timeless snails traversing moss in a Jewish cemetery, the immortal one-armed pianist and Abraham Lincoln Brigade vet, Eddie Balchowsky, Nuns at home, Coptic baptisms in Lake Michigan and other color and black and white surprises.

A native of Poland, Biedermann came to Chicago in her early twenties during the martial law period, and proceeded to develop a new vocabulary for the curious new world she encountered.  Photography became a means not only for her own expression in a new language but a means of exploration. Of particular interest to her were the varied racial, ethnic and spiritual communities of her new home and over the years she has presented shows of bi-racial couples, the large urban Native American community, the lives of nuns in their communities and homes and, of course, the experience of immigrants like herself, adjusting to a new world of values and sometimes humbling rites of passage.

The "taking" of photographs has never been as important as the dynamic interaction between observer and subject--with each somehow transforming the other.  In this, the "giving" was as much as the "taking" away to a dark room or printer.  Biedermann has published in many magazines, journals and newspapers and has specialized in photographing children both in her studio and in their home environments.

For more about her work and the gallery she founded on the western edge of Wicker Park, Dreambox Foto, just west of Western on North Avenue, you may visit www.dreamboxfoto.com or www. iwonabiedermannphotography.com.

One special photograph to pause over is a triptych of reflections midway down the hall.

ENJOY!
